1970’s Amtrak Oil Crisis Advertisements (gallery)

Created in 1971 by the Rail Passenger Service Act, Amtrak was an effort by the United States government to revitalize the failing passenger train travel industry. Most existing inter-city train networks contracted with Amtrak and, despite being run as a private company, Amtrak received federal funding to finance its operations. The advertisements pictured above were part of Amtrak’s effort to capitalize on the oil crisis of the early 1970’s and attract more customers to the new service.
