Newspaper Articles 1980

These 1980 articles capture the controversy surrounding the Moon Agreement and the efforts of the L5 Society to put a stop to its ratification.  As these articles attest, the debate about ratifying the Moon Agreement reflected core American values and commitments–pride in American exceptionalism, faith in American free enterprise, pioneerism with regard to the exploration of new frontiers, and deep-seated suspicion of anything that smacked of competition-inhibiting “socialism.”  They trace the defeat of an international effort that, if successful, might have altered the legal terrain upon which lunar exploration and resource development might develop.  They thus constitute the history of the preservation of a frontier that now appears to hold a key to a possible energy future on Earth that would cure a great many of the health and environmental problems generated by the energy sources upon which we have relied to date.
