The Columbia: America’s Greatest Power Stream

A promotional film produced by the Department of the Interior in 1949 depicting the natural resources of the Pacific Northwest and the goals of the Department in undertaking the dam building projects on the Columbia River, particularly Grand Coulee Dam. This film is notable for the themes it depicts of the social, economic and ecological situation of the time. Woody Guthrie famously provided the soundtrack for the film, a classic example of using popular culture to forward a political or social agenda. [7:00-14:00; 17:30-20:30]
